  ABOUT THIS OFFICE

The Space Science Data Operation Office (SSDOO) manages and operates two major data intensive branches: (1) the National Space Science Data Center (NSSDC), and (2) the Space Physics Data Facility (SPDF). SSDOO performs many space data operations activities ranging from managing selected operating spacecraft to the development and operations of data and information systems that support processing, management, archiving, and distribution of space science data and supporting information. The SSDOO office and its organization accomplishes its responsibilities through the archiving, cataloging, and dissemination of space science data and provides many specialized science support services and systems involving sensor algorithm development, processing, and mission administration and management. The division is heavily involved in the science data operations of several key spacecraft and interfaces with the Flight Projects Directorate (Code 400), the Applied Engineering and Technology Directorate (Code 500), the Space Sciences (Code 600) laboratories, and the space science community. In support of NASA educational goals, SSDOO has an active program in education and public outreach, and in support of both science and education needs, SSDOO has developed a visualization facility that supports 2D and 3D animations, technical illustrations, videos, and advanced scientific visualization tools.

SSDOO archives data and provides services to users for all three areas of modern astronomy, or space science:

Space Physics or Sun-Earth Connections, Planetary Science, and Astrophysics
